“In my monograph,'DINING ALONE In the Company of Solitude', I made an allegorical self-portrait. Since I first read ‘the Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood in the 1980’s, I have reread it and watched the television series. The images and concepts of this fictitious tale continue to have a profound effect on me. In both a personal and a political sense, I am terrified of authoritarian behavior.

This portrait imparts the impression that when I dine alone, I often do intensely explore my thoughts and emotions and the point of view I formulate is distinctly and powerfully my own. I am enjoined to confront my fears, my concerns and I am liberated.” Nancy A. Scherl
