During the pandemic I found the outdoor dining restaurants to be respites -they provided a sense of going somewhere special . It was at Island’s roadway restaurant that I realized I had to expand the original scope of my book, DINING ALONE In the Company of Solitude. Though I loved the universal appeal of the original book concept, I knew that the pandemic was a part of history in the making. I also knew how much the pandemic had isolated us all.

Join me at the historic Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village on January 30th, Thursday b/w 6-8pm. I will give a short artist talk during that window.

I lived just blocks away from the library for two decades surrounded by the best coffee shops, diners, cafes and restaurants. Though I was so happy to be pursuing my photography dreams, living in the West Village, enjoying my friends and family, I also took myself out, to have a cup of coffee, a salad, breakfast or dinner, while I reflected on the power of solitude and what and who inspired me to have that perspective.

With guidelines changing and many of the roadway, restaurant spaces coming down, much of the imagery in Part II of my book, DINING ALONE In the Company of Solitude (Daylight Books, 2022), entitled ‘Timely and Universal’ has become historic. This component of my work exacerbated the concept of solitude, bringing into the realm of isolation.

Island’s roadway dining area served as an extension of the restaurant located in the upper east side on Madison Avenue at 92nd Street. New York City’s guidelines after the pandemic forced many restaurants to meet the new rules or take their outdoor dining spaces down.

Much of the imagery in Part II of my book, DINING ALONE In the Company of Solitude, had all of a sudden become historic.
